Night hunts are practically routine where Lan Xichen's from, at least for cultivators, and exploring an unfamiliar forest with relatively unknown dangers doesn't seem any different just because it's in another world. There certainly seems to be something of a sense of ease as they travel, and then as they set up camp.
During the day, there's a flurry of activity as the camp's occupants drift in and out, setting up or taking down tents, making weapons or food, going off to collect firewood or go hunting or fishing, patrol the area or anything else that needs doing.
In the evening there's a roaring fire to ward off the chill, the scent of cooking food and the sound of conversation.
Someone - quite likely Lan Xichen himself - will invite anyone who happens nearby to come sit down, warm themselves by the fire and have something to eat.
At night, there's likely always someone up on watch who might need company, or who might come to investigate someone nearby.

I remember. In my world, you would try your luck in the streams at Cloud Recesses.
[ And in Yunmeng, too, he imagines, remembering how Wei Wuxian and his brother had attempted to persuade him to allow them to assist in facing the water ghosts so long ago, but he's aware that Lotus Pier is a difficult subject. He will not be the one to bring it up. ]
Do you use your hands as well?
no subject
Of course! It's more of a challenge and therefore more fun that way.
[It has been awhile but certainly this abilities don't go away with age. And in this body he is closer to the water. Might make things easier!]

He hasn't forgotten their conversation about what made them happy, after all, even if he hadn't quite been himself at the time.
So he wades back to the edge of the stream to set his spear on the rocks, gesturing back out at the water. ]
Perhaps you will allow me to observe and learn from your technique.
no subject
I will make sure to show you all the best techniques!
[He wades into the water, being careful of the rocks and moving slow so he doesn't scare all the fish away. Once he finds a good spot where he doesn't have to worry about slipping, he digs his feet in and leans over to watch the water.]
It's been awhile since I've done this..let's see if I still have it!

[ His expression is soft with amusement, stance relaxed and open, and it's fairly clear that he is enjoying himself. This trip has been the most content, the most alive that he has felt since that night in the temple, and now is no exception. ]
I have the utmost faith that your fishing catching abilities are as exemplary as they ever were.

Ah! No fish is too quick for the great Wei Wuxian!
[He makes sure his grip is tight as he waddles back towards Zewu-Jun.]
no subject
But his uncle is not here, and he doesn't mind if Wei Wuxian sees his amusement as encouragement.
So his smile stays unhidden, and he even claps in appreciation as Wei Wuxian triumphantly wades back. ]
I will make sure to tell the story of your success tonight at the campfire.
no subject
A tale full of excitement and triumph!
[Which for tales of him is not too far off but usually lacking in triumph. He washes his hands off in the river and then turns back towards the middle again.]
How many fish do you think we will need? I imagine we are feeding everyone, right?
[He has actually gotten fairly used to helping with the food preparation. He helped Lan Zhan make the deer skewers and the lotus soup. He can certainly help with the fish too. Of course he is usually kept on small tasks that he can't possibly screw up dinner with, but it still counts as helping.]

[ And now he is teasing, just a little, but his smile is still genuine.
He takes a seat on one of the rocks by the edge of the stream, one leg dangling below to keep it in the water and the other propped up to lean the basket of caught fish against. He does a quick count of the ones he had caught earlier before taking one out to begin the process of cleaning it to be eaten. ]
Two or three more? If there is extra we can offer it to the others.
[ The others meaning those outside of what he has possibly too quickly come to see as a family unit, of course. ]
no subject
I'll do my best!
[He stares into the water, waiting for that perfect moment again.]
Xichen..[Is that too casual? Ah..hard to say. It's already been said now so he can't exactly take it back. He shrugs and continues with his thought.] Do you think the hotel has a reason for having us out here?
[He doesn't really mind it even if there is. But if there is something dangerous lurking then he needs to start being a little more aware and less carefree. It's too easy to fall into this comfortable enjoyment of just being outside with everyone and having this freedom to do whatever they want. He really needs to not be so trusting of the hotel and the people in it.]

The approval he means to give is completely sidetracked by the question that follows, however. He breathes out, slowly, and looks down as he considers that.
He finishes carefully removing the fish's internal organs, cleaning both it and his hands off in the stream before he responds. His words are careful, contemplative. ]
I think that those who are in power and feel a threat to that power will do nothing without at least one ulterior reason. I do not believe they mean to kill us - if they did, they could have done so more easily at the hotel. I think they mean to make a demonstration.
no subject
The hotel needs us. Didn't they tell us before that it runs on our emotions? So it wouldn't do for them to get rid of us.
[He drops the fish in the basket and heads back out to what he now considers the golden fishing spot.]
Do they want to demonstrate how much power they have over us...or test us to see how much we can survive?
[Perhaps it is a combination of the two.]
