to lose all my senses —

THAT IS JUST SO TYPICALLY ME

It's not clear how many days it's been since you arrived in Wonderland. With it stuck in perpetual twilight, it could have been days, perhaps longer — everything starts to blur together, in this artificially joyful place. Maybe you've started to feel like you you're getting used to it, maybe not...

But eventually, something happens to break the monotony. Your ears begin to ring, and ring, and ring and then — stop. The lights become blinding, forcing you to squeeze your eyes shut and try to rub the afterimage of all that light from them — but when you open your eyes, you still can't see.

The staff don't understand when you ask them what's happened to you. "You've always been like this", they insist. They sign at you, or try to hand you papers written in braille — if you insist you've never signed in your life, or that you can't read braille, they laugh at your funny joke. You begin to wonder — have you always been this way? You were so sure... But everyone around you is equally sure of their truth, and their voices are so much louder.

As if that weren't enough, nothing in the hotel can be found in the same place twice. All the shops keep switching places, once you enter one area it's as though everything shifts in the minutes before you leave again. Getting back to your room is a struggle — where are the elevators? Finding food is nearly impossible — the Pig & Pepper was there, but now it's not. The staff are equally useless here — they have no idea what you mean about moving shops. Where would you want to move to when all your needs are accounted for right here?

What is going on?

SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL — 5/11

The day starts like any other has in the Hotel — unsure if a new day has started at all. Perpetual twilight and lack of clocks makes it difficult to tell time here in the Hotel, but on this particular day, something breaks up the monotony. It begins slowly — or else it happens all at once. Over the course of the day, all Oysters find themselves losing a sense. Staff don't understand their complaints — you've always been like this, they say, gentle, as though to a person in the middle of a break with reality.

Losing your temper won't help, either. Oysters who shout and yell will find staff remaining frustrating calm and compassionate, insisting that they cannot fix what has always been and murmuring about Mad March before taking their leave. Physical aggression may result in a spike of fear, but staff will quickly make their exit and may avoid that Oyster for a while.

If that wasn't enough, nothing in the Hotel is staying put.

IT'S LIKE A MAZE IN HERE — 5/11

The interior of the Hotel has ceased to remain stationary. Beginning at the same time as the loss of senses, the establishments of the Hotel begin to jump around, never staying in the same place twice. An Oyster may have entered the Pool of Tears from the lobby, but exit it into the middle of the casino. The Pig & Pepper Buffet is never in the same place twice, and always seems to move right when Oysters desperately need a meal.

Even as the old shops move, new establishments seem to be being added, but they aren't easy to find — Oysters will see a new sign across the building from where they are, only to see it's moved again by the time they get there. If you take your eyes off an establishment as you head toward it, it disappears and reappears elsewhere. Making it to the new establishments will take some time and dedication (or perhaps plain stubbornness), but there are rewards in it for any Oyster that can manage the feat!

Back To Rights — 5/15

A few days after the effects of the event begin, they just as suddenly end. Sight, hearing, speech — they all return in a rush, possibly overwhelmingly so, and when one tries to make their way to a shop, it stays exactly where it was when they first saw it, and they exit the exact same place they entered. Staff will react much the same way as they did when they were questioned after the loss of senses — you've always been like this.

You made it through, Oysters. You've completed your first event in the Hotel.

We hope you enjoy this first event, Oysters! If you have any questions, please leave them on the first comment to this page. Happy playing!

[Mikumo reads over the message quickly - she'd rather not be left out of the loop, even if the loop in this case doesn't provide too much extra information. The expectation that they should know sign language makes her eyes narrow, and she nods visibly as she reads that last line, because that's the conclusion she would've drawn as well.

Writing it down does make it much easier for her, and she leans slightly forward to read the staff's message. With her previously sharper eyesight taken away, she's had a bit of a tendency to overcompensate here while getting used to it.]

How can you not know when we woke up like this? This is your hotel, it's an awfully large oversight to let something like this happen to your guests.

[Almost as soon as she says that, the message is amended by the staff - to read that they don't know because they've always been like this.

Mikumo quickly taps out a message with one hand and shows it to Sam.]
They couldn't maintain a lie like that without knowing in advance. This is some kind of setup.

That's worse for someone your age, isn't it?

[A genuine question typed rather idly as she follows alongside him, having no apparent problem keeping up and keeping a close eye on their surroundings. She considers that it probably sounds like a stupid question, but then, there's a lot of minutiae about people she mostly knows in theory and hasn't really directly encountered, this being one of them. She knows Reina can down cans of that preserved jellyfish stuff she likes so much, and this boy strikes her as about the same age.]

Mikumo hums curiously - she sees power in music more often through singing, but she can't see why it wouldn't be possible with another kind of instrument too.

"In my case, it's more that mine and my friends' voices have a particular uncommon trait to them that makes them work on this specific condition. So perhaps a bit less flexible than your example, though there are rare singers who can affect things more widely."

Mikumo is one of them, which she doesn't mention because that opens up a rather nasty can of worms she's quite happy ignoring until she has to open it.

"People tend to fear darkness and unknowns. Did you seek out that method or fall into it?"

[Mikumo nods firmly to the response, because that was pretty much exactly her train of thought. If they're messing around with senses, it would be an ideal time to mess with other things, especially if they're pretending everything was already like this.]

My room didn't seem changed when I left, but that may have just been because it was inconvenient to change them around us. I'd rather go further away from the rooms than double back first, though.

[It seems more likely to show a result than returning the way they came just to see if anything happened while their backs were turned.]

"A little of both? I lost the ability to use spiritual so the only way I could continue what I was doing was to use the dark arts. And I kind of fell into a place where if I didn't then I was going to die."

Literally fell..from the sky..into a burial mounds. Long complicated story.

"But it was frowned upon in my world so I wasn't the most popular person for using it."

"Sorry, man," Eddie says quickly, feeling Richie trip and holding onto his friend more tightly to keep him from tripping over something Eddie doesn't notice or, for that matter, his own feet if his pace falters from the way it's currently matching Eddie's. "I don't want to lose it again. We can figure out a way to talk when we get there. Maybe we can do a voice to text thing for you, so I can see what you're saying, or something," he suggests.

To say that he's grateful when he's able to get them to close the gap and he can pull his door open to look into his room, in spite of the fact that it's just sitting there in the far end of the casino where it decidedly does not belong. "Fuck yeah," he says under his breath, guiding Richie inside and letting the door slam behind them because he's more intent on getting Richie to the bed so he'll have somewhere to sit than he's worried about the noise the door closing itself will make.

"Holy shit," he says. "This is fucking nuts. Are you okay?" he asks, moving close enough so that Richie can reach him to continue with the tapping system, placing Richie's hand on his arm just so that he knows where it is.

As Eddie pulls him along, Richie does his best to follow as quickly as he can. He tries not to focus on anything other than the weight of his friend's arm around his waist, the sound of his breathing as they rush towards Eddie's door, the tiny changes they have to make in order to get there safely.

By the time Richie hears the door slam shut, he's breathless and his heart is pounding from a combination of adrenaline and lack of cardio. There's absolutely no resistance on his end as Eddie plops him down on the bed - though he does reach out instinctively as the other man pulls away, not wanting to lose him again.

Thankfully, their physical connection resumes soon enough, and it's only at that point Richie actually lets himself relax a little. He slumps down where he's sitting and nods weakly, his eyebrows knitting together. The double tap on Eddie's arm follows soon after.

"This fucking sucks," he says, knowing full well Eddie won't be able to hear him, but too frustrated to just keep quiet. His facial expression shows his frustration pretty clearly, though.

[Here, have some mock surprise which she imagines must look a little silly without the sound of her gasping to go with it. After that, she'll smile a little before typing up a response.]

That would be a challenge, wouldn't it? Strange though that there's no way up there that I've seen. I wonder if the staff have a way to get there.

[...or if there even is one for that matter.]

Crowley "listens", feeling like the words are being engraved on his palm. It's a shame Aziraphale is blind, because Crowley's own expression is a mirror of Aziraphale's. Soft, warm, and a little in awe.

"Little of both, wouldn't you say? We helped save the world, ought to go enjoy it."

Mikumo can't say she's surprised about that last part, though the way he puts it gets a dry laugh out of her. "I can imagine. Sometimes people have to reach low to defend themselves, but people who haven't been in that position are often ready to judge regardless of the situation."

Since her whole life has been war, she has a fairly flexible lens as regards the morality of that sort of thing. If he's doing it to protect himself and not hurt innocent people, she doesn't really see the issue.

"Though I suppose I see it more often with people who haven't adjusted to the battlefield yet. Newcomers who aren't prepared to take an enemy's life to protect civilians even though they know what they signed up for."

Mikumo phrases it like something she's completely used to, even though it's understandable for it to be a moral quandary to people who've only just entered a war for the first time.

"For us..civilians don't have to actually go to war. Cultivators are the only ones that are supposed to fight. But sometimes clans try to show how powerful they are by destroying those that can't possibly defend themselves. War is just a terrible thing for anyone to have to deal with..but it should be left to those that know how to handle it."

He hates to see anyone have to fight, especially fight other people. When it's the dead that they are fighting it is a little more clear cut. Release them, send them back to death and be done with it.

"This fucking sucks," Eddie echoes without realizing he's echoing it. "Do you have your phone on you or anything, dude?" he asks.

Eddie's thought process is that perhaps if Richie's got his phone, they can set it up for voice to text, and then Richie can talk to the phone, and Eddie can look at its screen for the translation. The only problem he can foresee is that Siri's not the brightest bulb in the box, and Android's version is not a whole lot better, so there's a lot of potential for Richie to say one thing and for the device to decide he means something different. It's better than nothing, though.

He settles himself on the bed a few inches from Richie, rubbing his temples briefly before settling for pinching the bridge of his nose in frustration. This is actual ass. He'd almost rather they were back in the Well House because at least they would've both had all five of their senses to work with. Though, even thinking that, Eddie feels a surge of guilt because he and Richie are getting a break so that they can go back into the fray refreshed, is how Eddie's looking at it. He's certainly not willing to allow himself to believe that they'll be stuck here forever and he's even less willing to let himself believe that they're stuck here forever or that they've unintentionally abandoned the rest of the Losers to try to fight Pennywise without them. One man down was scary enough in Stanley's absence, but three? They'll never make it.

It's not much of a difference, practically speaking. My diet was fairly sparse before I came here, so if they've somehow limited our food resources on top of all this you're welcome to whatever we find.

[Mikumo's rather straightforward expression as she types that out makes it seem exclusively a pragmatic matter, but she really is used to not eating all that much. She had a very strict and specific diet until very, very recently, so going without food for a couple of days isn't going to be as big of a deal for her as long as she has access to water.]

"I wouldn't call it 'civilians going to war', they're trained into soldiers before anyone actually lets them onto the field. The experienced ones know who's going to get themselves killed the moment they set foot on a battlefield and hold them back until they either quit or learn the lessons they need to learn."

Or at least cover their asses until they do, in the case of some of the recent newcomers to the squadron Mikumo works with. She definitely didn't envy Messer that job for the brief time he had it.

"But civilians usually get tangled up in it even if they're not the soldiers. Especially in our case, since that condition I mentioned my singing works against causes people to become uncontrollably violent, and it's quite random who it affects."

"I understand that..Although my power is supposed to only affect the dead, but sometimes the dead don't like to listen."

And when the dead don't listen..lots of people get hurt. "Do you get to sing out of enjoyment at all? Can you turn your power off?"

At least for him, he can play his flute without using the dark cultivation.

That makes sense to me. Besides the rooms being changed wouldn't be as much of a problem as if it were something else. The restaurant for example. Losing a source of food would be a much bigger issue.

[Though hopefully it isn't doing much other than warping around like everything else seems to be.]

That's usually the case, yes.

[She wonders if she should bring up that there's a headless person in Chaldea. But no, probably best to not overcomplicate things right now.]

Though if they can take away our senses, I suppose there's no reason to think they couldn't do the same to our heads.

[That thought is...well, it's a lot less funny to her.]

Is it? It was just a strictly controlled regimen. And if I was outside of that, usually I was eating field rations.

[So it's a military thing, apparently. Despite the fact that Mikumo looks like she's anything but military besides the alertness to everything around them.]
stargazed: (but i still want to know more...)

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-06-05 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
Mikumo laughs at that, though it's something of a bitter thing. "You know, I didn't think about singing for enjoyment until recently. I enjoy singing, but that wasn't why I was doing it. That said, the 'power' only really makes a difference if there's people around with that condition. Outside of that, it's just like I'm singing 'normally' anyway, so I don't have to turn it off."

That said, his remark about the dead does have her curious, so she comes back to that after her own comment has given her time to mull on it. "So you're a...necromancer is the word, isn't it? It's not something I ever ran into in my world."
stargazed: (the more i wish to know)

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-06-05 12:47 pm (UTC)(link)
[That was one concern Mikumo had - dealing with an interfered-with food supply chain was something that came up relatively recently in her own world, so it's fresh on her mind.]

That, and if hearing isn't the only sense being removed. Someone blind would have a much harder time orienting themselves, and who knows if this is them putting everything forward at one time.

[Which is basically her wondering if they're going to shift which senses are gone, but other people having different ones missing is also a possibility even if she hasn't met them yet.]
