Wei Wuxian had his reasons for asking; Lan Wangji had told him their last entanglement had nearly cost him his marriage. This Lan Wangji and his husband had both been targeted by the people who were running this place, and not only that, both had died. It wasn't as if he expected the man to come running with a permission slip from his husband in hand, but given their history, he had reason to worry.

The answer he receives though, isn't at all what he expects, and he can't help wondering if things with the other two are really as fine as he assumed. They must be... right? It's why he'd tried so hard to stay out of it.
