SO RESTED HE BY THE TUMTUM TREE —

AND STOOD AWHILE IN THOUGHT

What an unfortunate time to be short-staffed, when there's so much to do! For days, staff members can be seen bustling about, always on the move. No time to stop and talk — the Queen is preparing a surprise! Staff members seem to positively hum with excitement. Their numbers are replenished in fits and bursts. Groups of new hotel staff appear all at once, until there seems to be even more of them than there were before the disappearances.

They don't seem to understand who you're talking about, if you ask about those disappearances. "Staff turnover happens in every establishment, dear. Why — they might have even gotten a promotion!" Aren't you much more interested in the upcoming trip, anyway?

Now that there are more of them, staff members are eager to expand on the surprise. Oh, to see the gardens and the forest! You Oysters are so fortunate that the Queen wishes to show you the wonders of Wonderland. Of course, the forest can be dangerous — or is it only rumors? The opinion seems to change with every staff member you talk to, and no one can pin down why it might be dangerous. The only consensus seems to be to stay close to your escorts.

And most importantly: please remember the buddy system at all times.

BUDDY SYSTEM

07/11 - 07/12

At some point during all the preparation, Oysters may find themselves pulled in by another person. Physically pulled in, in some cases. Once this initial draw happens, the pair will be unable to stay very far away from each other.

When asked, staff members will reply that the two have been paired up for the upcoming trip! They are quite serious about the buddy system, you see. Going out into the forest alone is never a wise idea, and the Queen is so very concerned about your safety.

What's that? You don't trust, or even know, the person you've been paired with? It's a good thing you two will be spending so much time together, then, isn't it? Plenty of opportunity to learn to understand each other.

Shouldn't you be packing, anyway? You'll be leaving soon, after all!

THE QUEEN'S GARDEN

07/13 - 07/14

The garden itself is beautiful and spans multiple acres. There is a winding path lined with neatly manicured rose bushes in all colors, groves of fruit trees, wildflower patches where the air is heavy with bread and butter flies. Elaborate water fountains and delicate streams flow between small ponds, each bordered by different types of water plants and filled with everything ranging from goldfish to koi. Bright, sunny spots perfect for a picnic are easy to come by, as are quiet nooks tucked away in the shade.

Everything needed for a rousing game of croquet is set up in a relatively clear area of the garden. Participation in a good, friendly game of Oysters versus their staff escorts is encouraged — all in good fun, of course! Croquet is the traditional game of the royal family, after all.

As afternoon begins to wind into evening on the first day, Oysters are ushered towards a part of the garden that contains a large hedge maze. The group is kept together as they wind through the maze. The staff members who lead them clearly seem to know exactly where they're going, and never hesitate at the many different forks in the maze.

Before the sun has set, they will arrive in a large clearing in the middle of the maze, where a great feast has been set up with the food they helped to prepare over the last few days. Oysters are informed that this is the last time on the trip that their meals will be taken care of for them. Enjoy it! Once they're out into the forest proper, they will have to make use of the Wonderland information pamphlets and their camping skills.

It is in this same clearing that they will stay the night. For this first night, staff members will assist in setting up tents if needed.

THE TULGEY WOOD AND RUINS

07/14 - 07/18

The next day comes with more bright sunlight, at first. As the group continues through the second half of the maze, the foliage above grows thicker and the inside grows darker. Astute Oysters may notice that the make up of their staff escorts seems to have shifted overnight. The members of the hotel staff that were so excited and helpful in the garden are few and far between, replaced by those in dark suits, all with some form of club pattern on them.

It's the Order of Clubs, the few remaining hotel staff will say when asked. They are protectors, enforcers — and the forest is dangerous. The Queen is so considerate of their safety, to bring the Order out now.

The end of the maze comes relatively quickly. It opens out onto an expansive forest, but even here the sunlight does not return in full force. Whether it's the density of the branches, the overcast day, or the wisps of fog that drift through the trees, the light overhead is weak and the air chilled.

The last of the hotel staff remain in the maze. From here on out, Oysters are accompanied only by the Order. As they walk through the forest, a member of the Order seems ever present — there's always one within eyesight, if not within hearing distance. Occasionally, Oysters will catch sight of someone else mingling with the members of the Order. His dark suit is sleek, plain, and the figure he cuts might not have been distinct from the rest if it weren't for his height. And if it weren't for the ceremic rabbit head on his shoulders.

Oysters who seek him out will find that he is no longer present among the group of Order members by the time they arrive.

"You saw Mad March?" one of the Order will say if asked, sounding startled that he was seen. "You best pretend you didn't."

The nights in the forest are even colder. Oysters better hope they can start a campfire, put up their tents against the chill, or stay close to each other for warmth, as the Order will offer no help. They are here only for guidance — and protection.

On the third day in the forest, the group will arrive at the ruins of an old kingdom. Old cottages and shops are only faint outlines, everything but the stone long since rotted away and overgrown with foliage. The remains of a castle isn't in any better condition. Oysters who choose to explore may notice that all shown signs of a battle from long ago. They may even find the skeleton of the king himself, still sitting on his throne. The members of the Order now seem to be alive with activity, splitting off into groups and venturing out while others stay with the Oysters.

Remember the buddy system, the Order tells them. They will stay here for a few nights. This is the last place that is safe to tread, but danger lurks on the outskirts.

THE RETURN

07/18 - 07/19

It starts on the night of the 18th. The woods have been quiet for the most part, with nothing other than the sound of nearby streams and the noises of various animals. That night, even those are gone. An unnatural stillness takes over the area. Those who venture out to find the cause may find nothing — or they may be one of the first to discover that what lurks beyond the old kingdom has ventured closer.

Throughout the night of the 18th and into the day of the 19th, Oysters are at risk of encountering one of three types of creatures.

It may come as the sound of many legged-footsteps, first off in the distance and then close enough that the creature should be within sight. There are only trees, as far as the eye can see. And then motion. Briefly, it seems as though the very trees themselves are coming alive, but it will soon become apparent that these are legs. The creature stands on four limbs as tall as the trees, and when it holds still it camouflages easily among them. The roots it buries into the ground are long talons when unearthed, each tipped in a hooking claw. Its long neck is lined with the same armored scales that make its legs look like trees, and its small head is dwarfed by its extremely long snout, filled with rows of sharp teeth.

This is the Bandersnatch.

Or maybe it comes first as a shrill scream, like nails against slate. The shriek will seem to echo, instilling an unnatural sense of fear in any of those who are unlucky enough to hear it. Before long, the scream will be accompanied by the heavy flap of huge wings. The creature's approach seems to be imminent, and yet, it doesn't come. The moment draws on — and on — and on — and on — is there anything there, or is it only your imagination? Are you afraid of your own shadow, are you hearing screams in the wind and wings in the rustling of the trees?

Until it swoops down and tries to pick you up in its claws. It is a massive bird of prey, resembling a vulture, if a vulture had a twenty five foot wingspan and eerily human eyes. You've found the JubJub bird.

Then there is the reptilian Jabberwock.

There is no subtlety in its approach. The ground shakes with every step, announcing its arrival well in advance. It is bipedal and seems almost ungainly as it stalks through the trees, lurching its scaly body around and whipping its long tail for balance. Whenever this causes it to connect with a tree, the force behind it leaves the tree broken and bent. Its arms end in three fingered talons, and the round head at the end of its sinuous neck is almost entirely mouth. There is the lick of flame in its eyes, and the drool that escapes from its powerful jaws is hot enough to burn.

The members of the Order who had always seemed to be so close are conspicuously absent. It looks like the Oysters are on their own to defend themselves against these creatures.

The Jabberwocky, JubJub bird, and Bandersnatch will not be easily defeated, and few who fight will escape injury! There may be more than one of each creature type, so different groups can encounter the same type of creature if you choose. You can choose to have your characters ultimately triumph and take down the creatures, or fall to the creature. The members of the Order will arrive at the end of the fight. They will take out any creatures that remain, for those who choose not to have their characters successfully kill one, and will begin clean up of the others.

For those who are interested in having their characters seriously injured or even killed, for ease of reference here is the information regarding death and injury from the FAQ:

With the Carpenter's skills, no death or maiming in Wonderland is permanent — though the consequences of it might be. When your character dies, send the mods a PM describing any injuries the character sustained in their demise. For lacerations such as being stabbed or sliced with a sword, etc, characters will be returned to full health in a few days with gold filling in their wound in the style of Japanese kintsukuroi. This repair is permanent and will be a part of your character for the duration of their stay in Happy Hearts, even if you drop and reapp. If your character is killed or maimed through decapitation or the loss of a limb, your character will be in recovery for three days, and will return to the hotel with a ceramic replacement — an animal head for decapitation, and a non-articulated limb for lost appendages. This repair is not permanent unless you wish it to be, and Carpenter will have a flesh replacement ready for your character after another week.

Characters who have medical skills, abilities, or supplies may work to tend the wounds of others in the brief aftermath of the fight. Members of the Order will assure them that they will return to the hotel in the morning to get the medical attention that they need. And indeed, those characters who are still conscious after the fight will find themselves falling asleep at some point. Characters may dream about the same padded box from their first arrival. When they wake, they will be back in the hotel.

If you have any questions, please leave them here!

II.

Lan Wangji was out and about, around gathering firewood and other resources for camp. It was then he noticed that the other Wei Ying wandered off, and when he follows after him to see what he's up to.

Only to see him climbing up a tree and what it looks like to him, having a conversation with a squirrel.

Looking up at him from below. "Having fun...?"

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-14 10:44 pm (UTC)(link)
He'd been so distracted by his conversation with the squirrel, he hadn't even heard Lan Wangji approach, so even with a soft voice, it's enough to startle him, arm slipping from the lowest branch. He's off-balanced, hanging on upside-down by his knees, but at least he hasn't fallen. His hair is hanging low enough to brush Lan Zhan's shoulder though, and as he looks back up, the little rodent has already scurried off, apparently satisfied with having cursed him out.

"Ah- Lan Zhan. I was just... trying to get a better view of where we are."

Becoming worried as he sees he is distracting him and made him startled with his presence. So Lan Wangji positions himself beneath him, his arms open wide and ready to catch him, just in case.

"Wei Ying, are you stuck? If you need to come on down, I can help and I won't speak until you do. Don't worry, I can catch you. Go slowly."
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048189)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-15 06:13 am (UTC)(link)
Was he stuck? Well, he wasn't in a great position, but he was pretty sure he could figure his way out of it.

"It's okay! I got it! I got it!" he assures, attempting to swing his weight back up so he's right-side-up, at least. The branch seems to have other plans though, and the sudden motion is enough to snap it messily and he lets out a startled yelp as he tumbles toward the earth. Oops.

Looking up, full of worry, he positions himself right beneath him to where he is at, and open his arms.

"All right. I am here for you, just in case."

Hearing the snap of the branch, he predicted correctly of the possibility of what's going to happen. He doesn't have his golden core, but his body is well-trained, his muscle has the cellular memory of doing the harsh physical training and weight lifting in the Lan Sect style.

In that second, when he sees Wei Ying fall, he rushes forward to catch him in his arms.

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-17 06:00 pm (UTC)(link)
He hardly has a moment to react as he's falling, which is probably for the best, since any unwarranted flailing would have earned Hanguang Jun a kick or an elbow to the face. Instead, he lands in a heap in Lan Wangji's arms, whole and unharmed, save for a few twigs and leaves in his hair.

"Ah. Good catch," he laughs, a little breathless from the fall.

"With how often we've wound up like this, I'll be tempted to just have you carry me around all the time!"

Lan Wangji realized in that instant, how hard it is, both physically and energetically without his golden core can be. Wei Wuxian in his arms is a lot heavier than usual. But he caught him at the expense that his back hurts.

Forcing a smile, "We can't do that everyday, but I'll try." Then gently he sets him on the ground and lets him go.
sadflutenoises: (Default)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-19 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Maybe it's just his imagination that Lan Zhan's smile seems a little tight, it's always rather small and soft. He pats his shoulder gratefully as he's set down.

"Okay, maybe not everyday, I'll save it for special occasions," he teases.

"Thought I might get a better view of where we're headed from up higher, but everything is pretty dense. And the animals talk? Or at least that squirrel was pretty good at cursing me out."
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-19 04:49 am (UTC)(link)
It has been stressful for him as of late. Nodding once, once he's back on his feet.

"Of course. But only if you're not careful and you get hurt, become ill and have a reckless accident like what just happened. For now, I saved you again, and thank goodness you're in one piece."

Looking at him curiously, "Cursing? The squirrel is speaking to you?"
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048085)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-19 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
"I won't break that easy, don't worry," he assures with a smile. He's even got much more experience than the rest with facing dangers without a golden core. A few bumps and bruises are nothing to cry over. He'd have been fine. Mostly.

"Did you not hear him?" Wei Wuxian's face turns puzzled. He'd been yelling pretty loudly, offended as he was that his home had been disturbed.
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-20 02:42 am (UTC)(link)
As long he is fine, Lan Wangji is relieved. He made a promise that he will look out for him.

That only earned him a stare and he shook his head lightly. "No. What manner of power you have that you can hear him speak? What did the squirrel said to you?"

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-20 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Oh! I did have some of those special teas, before we headed out," he admits, looking somewhat guilty. Maybe he shouldn't mention that one also seemed to have been meant for Lan Zhan. Something about sensing spirits, though it'd done little for him so far.

"Maybe that's what it is?" he hasn't tried them before, and so, wasn't entirely sure what to expect. But at least unlike the emotional teas, these seem a bit useful.

"He was ah... rather upset I'd stuck my foot through his front door, then followed it up with some things that are... probably not fit for the second jade of Lan to hear," he gives a short laugh.

"You drank a tea that allows you to speak to animals?" He mused in wonder, and he wonders if that is any useful.

"Mn. Animals are territorial like that, so I'm not surprised." After a few moments thought, he has an idea. "Wei Ying, I wonder. If we searched around the area of the forest, maybe we can ask the forest animals for information about this world?"

After all, he worked with the other Wei Ying using Inquiry and communication with the spirits and gain valuable information. He wonder if the animals of this place would know anything? It's worth a try. Any information is useful.
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048169)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-22 06:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"Mm, well it said something more like vermin, so I wasn't expecting quite so many creatures to fit in that category, I guess," and who was to say, with all the other weird things that went on here, that the animals didn't just decide to start talking?

Lan Zhan's suggestion did make sense though, if anyone knew about this area, this world in general, it would be the little animals, right?

"Oh! That's a good idea! They might know something, right?"

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-22 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
"I learned animals can know a lot of things too. For one thing, the rabbits back home know me better than humans." Lan Wangji sorta grimaced, because he admitted he's not a people person and he didn't care much to socialize.

"Vermin...huh. So whatever powers you have now, it's worth learning." He could also observed as he tends to, learning Wei Ying's strengths and weakness and encourage him to use it wisely. "Let's go ask around then."

That requires a little bit of hunting around or speaking to another squirrel in the other tree.
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048290)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-23 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
"Okay, if I could talk to the rabbits at Cloud Recesses with this, it would be a lot more fun," he pouts, but only briefly. Maybe then the rabbits would like him a little bit more. or at least not try to run off when he wants to pet them.

He nods, though, at Lan Zhan's idea to see if the animals know anything useful. He points up at the tree he fell from.

"Probably not that one, but if we can find some who are a little more friendly, we can have a nice chat."

Hunting small animals to roast up while he's traveling, with no towns or villages nearby... well, it's a useful skill, so tracking down more, isn't too difficult. He leads the way deeper through the forest, and it's not long before he spots a handful of chipmunks, scurrying around collecting food. He makes a shushing gesture toward Lan Zhan, as if he really has to tell the quiet man to be any quieter, then crouches down to start calling out toward the rodents, hoping it's not going to scare them off.

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-24 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
He decides to be greatly humored by this and yet he takes the matter quite seriously. They were quite serious hunting for wild rabbits and hares to seek a conversation with.

"Mm, maybe we'll find some wild rabbits around and we ask them."

He follows after him, hunting for whatever wild animals of the rodent kind they could. They found some chipmunks. When Wei Ying makes a shushing noise, he kept quiet and observed carefully, and stood back. "..." And simply watch Wei Ying having a chat with chipmunks.
sadflutenoises: (bunny kisses)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-25 06:46 am (UTC)(link)
He hoped, for Lan Zhan's sake, that there was a wild hare or two, sneaking around. Well, that and idle curiosity over what on earth a rabbit spends its day chatting about. Wei Wuxian is usually fairly quick to make a fool of himself, but even he feels a little silly trying to figure out how to start a conversation with a small family of chipmunks. Luckily, they already seem to have started talking about the two approaching stranger, commenting on how many they've seen come through today.

"Oh, don't worry, we're just passing through," he assures them, "but, ah... do you have a minute to talk?"

He squats back on his heels, tries to make himself small and slightly less intimidating to such tiny creatures. They chittered back, a little surprised, but pleased that he knew how to 'mind his manners' and talk to them properly. He gave a very casual and sloppy sort of bow as he introduced himself.

"Right, I'm Wei Wuxian, and this is Lan Wangji. We were wondering, ah- well- Lan Zhan, did you want to ask them anything?"
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-26 01:25 am (UTC)(link)
Lan Wangji watched in curiosity to see that Wei Wuxian is really having a conversation with a family of chipmunks...and they talked, understanding back to back, the conversation isn't one way. He is perplexed and amazed that it actually works, so he won't question it.

Trying to figure out an idea of what to ask, "Why not ask them what they know of the hotel?" It's a generic question looking for a generic answer, as he figures the thoughts and ideas a chipmunk is simple and less complex that of the humans.
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048085)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-26 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
He nods his understanding, before turning back to the animals.

"Do you know anything about the hotel?" he tries, clarifying when they don't seem to react to that, "the big building, back that way."

He shakes his head, glancing back at Lan Zhan, "they don't really know about it."

At that, he turns back to them abruptly, his face registering confusion as they chitter at him, then scamper off suddenly.

"Ah... hm," he dusts himself off, "not very welcoming. They said if that's where we're from, we should go back. There's too many of us here, that we don't belong here."
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-26 07:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Lan Wangji thought correctly, so he wasn't surprised at the answer, but he was hoping for any more clues.

"They don't know? Really...?" Crossing his arms. It seems the animals don't know much, other than humans are not welcoming in their forest. Which sounds like more of a natural territorial mindest.

With a sigh, "I guess that is all, Wei Ying." If they ask any more questions from the different rodents and residents of the forest, it would probably be the same answer.
sadflutenoises: (Default)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-26 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
"Hard to say if it's the truth or not," he frowns, "but it was all they were willing to say. They seemed a lot more worried about the people here making a mess of things."

They seemed to appreciate that he'd stopped to chat, at least, but little more than that. The over-riding feeling was a very emphatic, get out.

"Maybe the rabbits will be in a better mood, if we can find any."
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-26 08:53 pm (UTC)(link)
By the suggestions of looking for rabbits. Maybe they know better than chipmunks. And smarter too.

"Mn. Let's keep looking. Maybe rabbits know better and they might be more helpful too." In Lan Zhan's opinion, they always do. Should Wei Ying continue the search, he happily accompanies him through the forest to take a closer look.
sadflutenoises: (pic#14048085)

[personal profile] sadflutenoises 2020-07-27 12:24 am (UTC)(link)
It seems as good an idea as anything, and he can only imagine how it might brighten Lan Zhan's day to see some real rabbits out here. In general, it's nice to see him in better spirits, he'd seemed so out of sorts without the Wei Wuxian from his world here. Now they had everyone together again, even if it wasn't under the best circumstances.

"Mm, rabbits are the best, after all," he agrees. Sometimes hard to catch, in the wild, but maybe luck would be on their side.
inquiryguqin: brightwings @ dw (137)

[personal profile] inquiryguqin 2020-07-27 12:59 am (UTC)(link)
Lan Zhan is much calmer when his Wei Ying returns, so he appreciated this Wei Ying's thoughtfulness. Searching around the forests is no easy task, especially walking on barefoot. And the wild rabbits in this forest likes to run and hide at times.

Eventually in a clearing, they spot a pair of rabbits, with grey-brown fur, nibbling on fresh dew of grass.

"Wei Ying, over there. Let's go asked them. The same question as to what they know of the hotel."
