Night hunts are practically routine where Lan Xichen's from, at least for cultivators, and exploring an unfamiliar forest with relatively unknown dangers doesn't seem any different just because it's in another world. There certainly seems to be something of a sense of ease as they travel, and then as they set up camp.

During the day, there's a flurry of activity as the camp's occupants drift in and out, setting up or taking down tents, making weapons or food, going off to collect firewood or go hunting or fishing, patrol the area or anything else that needs doing.

In the evening there's a roaring fire to ward off the chill, the scent of cooking food and the sound of conversation.

Someone - quite likely Lan Xichen himself - will invite anyone who happens nearby to come sit down, warm themselves by the fire and have something to eat.

At night, there's likely always someone up on watch who might need company, or who might come to investigate someone nearby.

The water is boiling. Then we must blanch the ribs.

[ He's also going to keep the lotus roots wrapped up now that they are cut, or else they will oxidize. Technically he should have waited and I totally forgot. ]

[This whole process is complicated. He can't believe his senior sister went through all this every time. He has an entirely new appreciation for the effort.]

How long will that take?

[billowing]

The blanching will take ten minutes. Then we must clean the ribs, and the soup will take four hours.

[ It'll take longer than that, probably. Four hours is the minimum. It'll taste better tomorrow. ]

Soup always takes this long, Wei Ying.

[scaredofdogs]

[He collapses backwards onto the ground as if struck.]

This is an all day process..I'm going to starve before then.

[billowing]

You can always have it tomorrow.

We will still make skewers today.

[scaredofdogs]

Ah! That's right! [He pushes himself back up and resumes his task.]

That means I already have something to look forward to tomorrow.

[billowing]

Mm. It does.

[ And there will be plenty of it to eat. Lan Wangji will make sure they both get their fill.

The water starts boiling, so he does do the blanching to help clean the meat from harmful bacterias. ]

[He yawns as the excitement of the day starts to catch up with him, especially since he has been motionless and peeling seeds for awhile. Being outside and everything they have been doing the last few days is more energy then he has used since coming to the hotel.]

Do I need to do anything to help with the skewers?

[billowing]

Yes.

The spices we picked will need to be toasted and crushed into powder.

[ Otherwise, they won't taste quite as good. ]

Do you think you could do that?

[scaredofdogs]

I can do that. What do we have to crush them with?

[He collects all the plants he had shoved in his robes and adds them to the piles that Lan Wangji collected.]

[ Lan Wangji goes to retrieve a mortar and pestle that

he'd carved himself.

Here. It's not the best, but we do not have an alternative.

[Lan Zhan...you're a beast. He takes the items and starts to work at that task.]

Are all the different plants going in the same thing or do we have separate containers for each?

[How the hell did they manage to get all this stuff here...he certainly didn't carry it.]

[billowing]

Just put them separately onto leaves for now. We will have to worry about containers later.

[ They didn't, welcome to the land of your husband makes everything from scratch and I mean everything. ]

[He nods and lays out different leaves for each of the plants he is going to grind and then starts working on the first one, humming softly as he works.]

[billowing]

The more fine it is, the better the flavor.

[ He feels like he's also helping teach Wei Ying how to cook, which is nice. ]

[He nods and finishes the first batch, holding it out to him to check it.]

[ He sticks his finger into the batch and tastes it. ]

It's good.

[ And they're going to need a LOT of it for the deer. ]

[He pours it out onto one of the leaves and fills the bowl with the next one.]

After being out here like this..doing all this stuff..it's going to be hard to go back in the hotel.

Mm. I prefer this as well.

And there is enough time to build shelter if they intend to keep us through winter.

[ Lan Wangji will start if they don't go back soon. ]

I doubt the hotel is going to leave us out here. If they wanted to cast us out, why wouldn't they just send us home?

[Seems to make more sense then just letting them out and leaving them to fend for themselves.

[billowing]

Perhaps they wish to see us try to survive.

[ In which case, they've got another think coming because Lan Wangji is thriving like this more than he had been at the hotel. ]

Heh..well then clearly they don't know as much about us as they think they do if we can't handle living out here.

[He doesn't even want to try and explain how he survived three months in the burial mounds. If he could handle that..he could handle a winter in wonderland.]

[ Lan Wangji has never asked, but there might be several reasons that he tries to make sure that Wei Ying is always comfortable.

He's survived so much. Lan Wangji only wishes for him to have a good life going forward. ]

They had never met us before.

Well if they decide to leave us out here then I will be perfectly content.

[There is plenty to entertain himself with outside. But only so much to do in the hotel. He doesn't like being caged up.]

Mm. We'll make it to the other side of the forest.

[ And figure out a way home out there. ]
