to lose all my senses —

THAT IS JUST SO TYPICALLY ME

It's not clear how many days it's been since you arrived in Wonderland. With it stuck in perpetual twilight, it could have been days, perhaps longer — everything starts to blur together, in this artificially joyful place. Maybe you've started to feel like you you're getting used to it, maybe not...

But eventually, something happens to break the monotony. Your ears begin to ring, and ring, and ring and then — stop. The lights become blinding, forcing you to squeeze your eyes shut and try to rub the afterimage of all that light from them — but when you open your eyes, you still can't see.

The staff don't understand when you ask them what's happened to you. "You've always been like this", they insist. They sign at you, or try to hand you papers written in braille — if you insist you've never signed in your life, or that you can't read braille, they laugh at your funny joke. You begin to wonder — have you always been this way? You were so sure... But everyone around you is equally sure of their truth, and their voices are so much louder.

As if that weren't enough, nothing in the hotel can be found in the same place twice. All the shops keep switching places, once you enter one area it's as though everything shifts in the minutes before you leave again. Getting back to your room is a struggle — where are the elevators? Finding food is nearly impossible — the Pig & Pepper was there, but now it's not. The staff are equally useless here — they have no idea what you mean about moving shops. Where would you want to move to when all your needs are accounted for right here?

What is going on?

SEE NO EVIL, HEAR NO EVIL — 5/11

The day starts like any other has in the Hotel — unsure if a new day has started at all. Perpetual twilight and lack of clocks makes it difficult to tell time here in the Hotel, but on this particular day, something breaks up the monotony. It begins slowly — or else it happens all at once. Over the course of the day, all Oysters find themselves losing a sense. Staff don't understand their complaints — you've always been like this, they say, gentle, as though to a person in the middle of a break with reality.

Losing your temper won't help, either. Oysters who shout and yell will find staff remaining frustrating calm and compassionate, insisting that they cannot fix what has always been and murmuring about Mad March before taking their leave. Physical aggression may result in a spike of fear, but staff will quickly make their exit and may avoid that Oyster for a while.

If that wasn't enough, nothing in the Hotel is staying put.

IT'S LIKE A MAZE IN HERE — 5/11

The interior of the Hotel has ceased to remain stationary. Beginning at the same time as the loss of senses, the establishments of the Hotel begin to jump around, never staying in the same place twice. An Oyster may have entered the Pool of Tears from the lobby, but exit it into the middle of the casino. The Pig & Pepper Buffet is never in the same place twice, and always seems to move right when Oysters desperately need a meal.

Even as the old shops move, new establishments seem to be being added, but they aren't easy to find — Oysters will see a new sign across the building from where they are, only to see it's moved again by the time they get there. If you take your eyes off an establishment as you head toward it, it disappears and reappears elsewhere. Making it to the new establishments will take some time and dedication (or perhaps plain stubbornness), but there are rewards in it for any Oyster that can manage the feat!

Back To Rights — 5/15

A few days after the effects of the event begin, they just as suddenly end. Sight, hearing, speech — they all return in a rush, possibly overwhelmingly so, and when one tries to make their way to a shop, it stays exactly where it was when they first saw it, and they exit the exact same place they entered. Staff will react much the same way as they did when they were questioned after the loss of senses — you've always been like this.

You made it through, Oysters. You've completed your first event in the Hotel.

We hope you enjoy this first event, Oysters! If you have any questions, please leave them on the first comment to this page. Happy playing!

He lets his feet wade in the water, soaking in the warmth. Sitting next to him, listening, he closed his eyes and imagined it too.

He remembered what Lotus Pier looks like as he talks about his hometown, the sun beaming down, and the lotus pods sprung from the river and surrounding the town.

Wanting to be encouraging, he scoots next to him, so Wei Wuxian can lean on him and feel his warm body close by.

River made a slight sound of annoyance, not directed at him but rather at the fact the hotel insisted on playing games with them.

"Oh, I think we should."

Letting her arm slip from his, she stepped away from him, trying to get a feel for the room they'd entered.

"Not ordinary furniture," she commented, running her hands experimentally over a nearby surface. But there was something familiar about it. "I think the hotel's trying to tell us something."

"What do you mean?" His hands landed on something and he felt around on it but it was unlike anything he had ever..or at least he assumes..he's never seen anything like it before. It has a slight step up which he takes and discovers a different texture then the floor was.

"what are these things?" There are bars running up either side and he follows them to where they meet in the center. There is some sort of box that he can feel there.

Wei Wuxian hooks his arm through Lan Wangji's and leans against him. He can envision everything of home, even if he hasn't been able to return to Lotus Pier in a very long time. It is all still very fresh in his mind as he thinks back to the lakes and the lotus and all the people who used to sell their goods on the piers. He misses it but he knows he is not particularly welcome there any more. So now all he has are these memories.

"All we need is watermelon and some cool drinks." He remembers that hot day when his senior sister brought all of them watermelon to eat and cool down with. Even if the memory also makes him sad, thinking back on those happy days makes up for it.

She continued to wander through the room, fingers travelling over each new piece of equipment she encountered. Some she couldn't easily identify, others she was reasonably confident in her assumptions.

"If I'm not mistaken, I believe we've found ourselves a gym." She was also relatively certain there hadn't been a gym last she'd checked, so she does hope it lets them back out again.

"What is a gym?" And then Wei Wuxian made the mistake of a lifetime. He pushed a button. Suddenly he let out a yelp as the ground beneath him started to move. He wasn't sure if he was supposed to jump or run or where to go. All he knew was that things were happening.

He stared to jog, grabbing onto the bars on either side of him, but no matter how fast he went he couldn't seem to get anywhere. And he was afraid if he turned around the motion would send him flying across the room.

"What is this? what do I do? where am I going?"

Well that wasn't good. As soon as she heard the subtle click of the machine being powered on, River knew it meant trouble.

"Hold on, I'm coming," she said, with slightly less patience than she could have had, making her way carefully but quickly back toward the commotion.

Once she was close, her voice was slightly gentler, but there was a note of amusement as well, "I would suggest you keep moving until I turn it off."

When she was confident she had the right button and wasn't going to inadvertently kick the machine into a higher gear, she pushed it.

"Better?" She probably found this far funnier than he did. "That, dear, is a treadmill. Some people prefer to get their exercise indoors."
scaredofdogs: (Shocked)

[personal profile] scaredofdogs 2020-05-21 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Wei Wuxian hopped off of it as soon as it stopped moving, panting for air more out of panic then because he had worked up any kind of sweat.

"You saved my life.." Because as far as he knew this was some sort of strange torture device.

"Why would anyone want to use something like that?" Wei Wuxian was in good physical shape even if this body was weaker than his original one, but even he couldn't understand why anyone would want to run in place for any duration of time.

Her answering laugh was warm and genuine. "Trust me, sweetie, you'll know if I save your life. But I'm glad to be of service."

She leaned against the offending machine as she considered how best to answer his question. Really, she'd never seen much point in the things either. But then, she got in her running elsewhere.

"I suppose if it's your only option," she said finally with an audible shrug, "Or maybe they just don't like to be outside."
scaredofdogs: (sad contemplative)

[personal profile] scaredofdogs 2020-05-21 02:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"I guess in this place outside isn't exactly a place we can get to. But it seems like we do enough running around without it." This hotel is much bigger then anything else he has ever been in and he's pretty sure he still hasn't seen all of it even after what feels like many days of exploring.

"I think I'd still rather run around and having moving scenery then run in one place."

"I don't know about 'game', but I was wondering if it was an experiment of some kind," Mikumo admits, with the slight sound of clothes and hair shifting as she puts one hand on her hip. She admittedly doesn't have much to compare something like this to, and most of what she does falls more on the 'potential war crimes' spectrum.

"I know the teas were more of a waiting for it to wear off situation, so it's hard to tell. Granted, both those and the size-changing food seemed more...random, for want of a better word."

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-05-21 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[With something more to focus on besides the infuriating behaviour of the staff, Mikumo's expression seems to settle a bit as well. If she's thinking down that route, then perhaps there's something to be done to bring it to an end more quickly.]

They seem to have had a few surprises up their sleeves so far. But knowing how often we should be expecting them might be useful in the future. And how long they stand to last.

[Those smaller ones around when they arrived were much more brief and had clear-cut solutions. This seems like an entirely distinct experience from those.]

Mikumo gives a slight laugh at the gift card remark, but it's a bit dry, as if to say that he's probably right about that part. She imagines if she wanted one, they could find a way to conjure something like it up at the casino.

As for his question, Mikumo leans against the chair across from him, one hand against her chin, considering her explanation. She's not particularly used to being the one having to explain this sort of thing to people. "The universe I come from has a lot of humanoid species spread across the galaxy. Humans are obviously one, but there are others on other planets that share the same form but have adapted in their own ways to their planets. All of those species are descended from an ancient progenitor culture we call the Protoculture, who spread their creations far across space after the first species they created rebelled. But that first creation still ultimately ended up wiping them out several hundred thousand years ago."

[personal profile] stargazed 2020-05-21 03:59 pm (UTC)(link)
[That second request is the one that makes Mikumo's brow arch, because that does actually pick at something she's noticed herself in her experimenting with getting around the hotel while this is going on.]

I never found a library either, so there may not be one. I have noticed food sources seem to be particularly evasive, though. Perhaps they wanted to find another way to make this troublesome for us.

[Hunger and continued frustration in not being able to get food certainly isn't going to help anyone work through this situation.]

"No, it isn't." Her regret was obvious. Though she'd voluntarily spent much of her life in prison, she'd always known she could escape whenever she liked and she sorely hated being caged.

"You're right, though." The casual cheerfulness was back, like she did this sort of thing every day. "If it keeps playing games like this with us, we should get plenty of exercise."

After all, she had been wandering around half the day trying to figure out where she was going.

"Odd I never noticed this before, though."

"Me either. Of course I wasn't really actively looking for this particular place. But I thought I had seen just about everything in the hotel. Is it possible with all the shifting around the hotel is..changing its rooms too?"

Could this one be replacing something else or was it just suddenly revealed because the hotel shifted enough for the door to be there. It's just weird regardless.

"Being small was kind of inconvenient at first but they it was fun to be carried around. I didn't like almost being stepped on but..it wasn't terrible. Losing my eyesight is a lot harder to deal with then that."

At least he could still function like normal..just in a miniaturized form.

Especially since this is much more than those initial surprises were.

[She's not really sure if this is the upper level of what they can do, but yes, some frame of reference would be nice. And she's not really sure if this counts as more than taking away her powers, but she hasn't really gone into that whole mess with anyone and now is not the time.]

And this may sound a bit silly since we're all in the same boat but if you find anything out or need assistance please let me know. I can't do much but I would be remiss to not at least try.

[Though what she can help with she's really not sure unless one of these shifting locations has their senses hidden away in it or something like that.]

With their arm hooked, Lan Wangji doesn't mind being leaned up. He splashed his feet in the water, enjoying a good warm soak. The scent of sandalwood, incense, and parchment of paper is on his robes. The scent of jingshi and the forest that surrounds his home back in cloud recess.

"..." He wanted to say Mn, but no word comes out. So he hooked his arm somewhat tighter to signal he heard him, and that yes, he wanted watermelon and cool drinks also.

Without really thinking about it, Wei Wuxian lays his head on Lan Wangji's shoulder. Usually his affectionate times have stayed within the moments that the other man is drunk. He hasn't dared to be so bold while they were both sober. But right now he feels oddly content and it just sort of happens..

He doesn't even realize it, still a little anxious about admitting his own feelings despite the things he's done to the unsuspecting drunken man. But the thoughts of home and the comfort of the other's presence just eases him into a very relaxed state.

Mikumo can't help but laugh quietly at that, considering the experience she ended up having with the food. "I grew rather than shrinking, which was a little harder to deal with. Being stuck in a hallway instead of being able to get back to the restaurant for the cure wasn't a very fun new experience. Though I'd still say this is worse."

The other had been more embarrassing than actually troubling, whereas losing her hearing with a job like hers and when she was literally designed to perform that role was more like a slap in the face.

[Mikumo nods at that first message, because that's the same train of thought she was having. It's possible there's a method to the seeming madness in having some minor things and some major things, but this early in the piece, it's just about impossible to tell.

The second one actually gets something of a smile out of her, amused in some way but supportive at the same time.]

I've been known to run off and work alone a lot, but from what I've seen so far, it doesn't seem like the more beneficial option here. There's a good number of us and none of us really want to be here, so not sharing information or helping others where I can would seem needlessly petty to me. With misinformation especially, we need to keep communication with each other.

[It's much easier for something like gaslighting to get to someone who's isolated than if they have people who can back up their recollection of things.]

This isn't so bad, Crowley thinks. Aziraphale is warm and cushioned, nestled snugly between his wings, and the weight of him is very manageable. He tries not to let his thoughts wander to the fact that this is actually rather pleasant.

He needs a break by the second landing. Fortunately for his pride, a door has finally seen fit to manifest.

"Lucky us," Crowley says, gently guiding Aziraphale back down to solid ground. He's glad Aziraphale can't see him, beet red and sweating. "Let's see where it goes?"

"I suppose we don't have another choice?" he asks, a little weakly. He clings on so tightly that he can feel how warm Crowley is, and so he reaches out with his handkerchief to wipe the sweat off his brow.

He nearly gets Crowley in the eye.

Yeah, but other than that, it's one of his smoother moves.

"Alright, fine." He frowns. "Let's go."
