Night hunts are practically routine where Lan Xichen's from, at least for cultivators, and exploring an unfamiliar forest with relatively unknown dangers doesn't seem any different just because it's in another world. There certainly seems to be something of a sense of ease as they travel, and then as they set up camp.

During the day, there's a flurry of activity as the camp's occupants drift in and out, setting up or taking down tents, making weapons or food, going off to collect firewood or go hunting or fishing, patrol the area or anything else that needs doing.

In the evening there's a roaring fire to ward off the chill, the scent of cooking food and the sound of conversation.

Someone - quite likely Lan Xichen himself - will invite anyone who happens nearby to come sit down, warm themselves by the fire and have something to eat.

At night, there's likely always someone up on watch who might need company, or who might come to investigate someone nearby.

No, I think they might like the stories.

[ Once he's done, he goes to the river to clean up his hands, and get re-dressed. ]

They could eat. There is enough deer.

[He hops to his feet and reaches up to put his hair back up, not wanting it to get it wet again when he goes to collect his clothing.]

It's too bad we don't have a whole lot of wine to share with them.

[billowing]

No, that would take awhile to ferment if we started now. We only have the tea.

[ Which was much more important okay not everyone drinks. ]

[But drunken soldiers tell the best tales! He wades back into the water.]

I'm going to collect my things. I'll meet you back at camp if you need help with dinner.

[billowing]

Mn.

[ He also collects all the meat pieces, and all the soldiers, so they can all go marching back together. ]

[He doesn't bother getting dressed since wet pants and dry upper levels would be an awkward feeling so he just heads back to comp with his clothes in his arms. Catching up with the others on the way.]

Do you need help carrying anything?

[billowing]

Mm, if you could. It's a lot.

[ For one person, mostly because it's very unwieldy. ]

[He wraps the robes around his waist again and reaches out to take some of the meat.]

Is this going to keep somehow? Or are we going to have to cook it all today?

[billowing]

It won't keep. We will have to cure most of it.

[ And make a lot of soup. Like. A lot. ]

You should eat well today.

[scaredofdogs]

I look forward to it! I will eat so much that I won't have to eat for two days!

[He is perfectly capable of practically eating his weight in food if he has to. He won't let Lan Wangji's hard work go to waste.]

[billowing]

[ Which means that Lan Wangji will try his hardest to make everything taste amazing. They'll have enough food to feed everyone at camp, the staff, and the spirit armies.

He gets started right away, boiling water, basically in a metal pot he'd had to cobble together himself because the one he was provided wasn't big enough.

But this one looks like a cauldron. ]

[He will help out with whatever Lan Wangji tells him to do. As well as keep the soldiers occupied so that they don't get too rowdy. Occasionally explaining to someone why their numbers in camp have doubled.]

[billowing]

[ As long as he busies himself with the lotus seeds, they should be alright.

In the meantime, Lan Wangji will slice the lotus roots. ]

How thickly does she cut them?

They are usually pretty thick. [He reaches over and indicates what is normally the thickness he sees in the soup.]

About like that.

[billowing]

[ He nods and makes his cuts. Each of them are a uniform size, so that everyone will get the correct amount in their bowls.

When he's done cutting, the water isn't boiling yet, so he helps Wei Ying with the peeling. ]

[he admires the plant a little before starting to take out the seeds. Reminiscing about lotus pier and even the plants he had started to grow at the Burial Mounds. It's a nice reminder of home and the good memories more then the bad.

And occasionally he sticks one in his mouth instead of where it should be going.]

[billowing]

[ That's alright. They have plenty of time, and plenty of lotus seeds. He may or may not also peel one, just to shyly offer it to Wei Ying. ]

[He will happily accept any that Lan Wangji gives him, smiling up at him and remembering his last time at Lotus Pier. He pops the seed in his mouth.]

Are you done with the rest of the soup?

[billowing]

The water is boiling. Then we must blanch the ribs.

[ He's also going to keep the lotus roots wrapped up now that they are cut, or else they will oxidize. Technically he should have waited and I totally forgot. ]

[This whole process is complicated. He can't believe his senior sister went through all this every time. He has an entirely new appreciation for the effort.]

How long will that take?

[billowing]

The blanching will take ten minutes. Then we must clean the ribs, and the soup will take four hours.

[ It'll take longer than that, probably. Four hours is the minimum. It'll taste better tomorrow. ]

Soup always takes this long, Wei Ying.

[He collapses backwards onto the ground as if struck.]

This is an all day process..I'm going to starve before then.

[billowing]

You can always have it tomorrow.

We will still make skewers today.

[scaredofdogs]

Ah! That's right! [He pushes himself back up and resumes his task.]

That means I already have something to look forward to tomorrow.

[billowing]

Mm. It does.

[ And there will be plenty of it to eat. Lan Wangji will make sure they both get their fill.

The water starts boiling, so he does do the blanching to help clean the meat from harmful bacterias. ]
