A Family Dinner

It has been quiet around the hotel other then the fact that there is snow everywhere and the staff seems to be in a festive mood. After some discussions about holidays they discover that this is a time of the year when people gather with families and celebrate. So it was only natural that this large, unique, extended family should all come together and enjoy a meal together and reflect over their time in the hotel.

So the dining area has been decorated with red and gold and green, christmas trees are brightly lit around the room. Music plays softly over the speakers and a large buffet of food is out for all to enjoy. A fire crackles in the fireplace warming the room so that they snow has been melted away and won't make people want to rush back to the warmth of their rooms.mo

Come and enjoy the festivities, share gifts with one another, tell stories and simply enjoy the company and expectations for the coming year.

He nods and looks around at the big table, "That's why we are all here to have dinner. We are all family now." Although he and his Lan Wangji aren't actually a part of their family...he likes to think that they are at least considered family.

"We don't really get to be all together very often."

He shakes his head. "We do, for this holiday." And probably for the next holiday.

"It will be New Years soon, also." And that was a big one, they'll all have to get together.

"We should have a big party and celebrate the new year coming in." Lots of getting drunk and dancing and fun to wash away all the bad things that may have happened in the previous year and welcome in the next one.

He wonders how many holidays he is going to get to celebrate with this Lan Wangji and the others.

"Mn," he agrees. "We will do all the normal festivities." He feels good about it, and they have time to plan.

"Do you think they will give us red envelopes to fill?"

Wei Wuxian tilts his head in thought. He wonders if the hotel would even know about that. "Maybe we could make our own if we can get our hands on red paper. But...sometimes this place is really good about giving us things when we ask for it."

He isn't sure they would have time to ask for it now but it is worth a try perhaps.

What would they even put in them once they got them?

But now that Lan Wangji is married, it feels odd not to give them out. "We'll figure something out." After all, they've adjusted pretty well to life here.

All these sweets have too much sugar and too much cream. Even the fruit seems to be glazed or covered with sugar. He takes a piece from Wei Ying's plate and brushes all of the sugar off.

He watches him dust off the sugar and laughs, "Too much flavor, Lan Zhan?" He enjoys teasing him about his bland food choices. He continues eating, wondering if when he does go home he will remember all the different things he got to try in this place. He didn't last time so it seems unlikely...it's just kind of a shame.

It really is too much sugar. He prefers to have bland things, it's just how he eats. He'll happily order spice that melts off your face for either of the Wei Ying, but not for himself.

"It is still good like this."

He pushes a plate of more bland things towards Lan Wangji. He had already determined that these items didn't have enough flavor for his taste so he was welcome to give it all to the other man.

"I'll just make sure to always save the bland things for you."

"I'll make sure to place all the other things on your plate," he responds, taking up a piece of bread.

It's just a plain piece of bread. He likes it.

"Mn." He slides over a cut of tiramisu.

He grins and takes the tiramisu. "It's the perfect arrangement to have. That way we will always have exactly what we want."

He enjoys eating with Lan Wangji because like with most things, their tastes compliment each other.

That worries him, honestly. That they always know what they want, and even made it beautiful for their wedding.

But in any way, Wei Ying isn't worried. So Lan Wangji will try not to be. "Mn, if it makes Wei Ying happy."

He looks over at Lan Wangji and quirks an eyebrow upwards. He knows that none of them are terribly happy to be away from home, but he has been trying to deal with everything the best he can.

"Good food should always make a person happy. But...are you not happy, Lan Zhan?"

"As long as Wei Ying is happy, that is all that matters."

He dodges the question about himself entirely.

He shakes his head, "But if you aren't happy then how will I ever be completely happy?" Because if Lan Wangji is sad that he will be as well. He doesn't ever want to see either Lan Wangji upset.

"It is not something you or I can fix," he answers. "Not right now. And so, it's not worth thinking about."

He leans over and lays his head against Lan Wangji's shoulder. He knows he can't help the man return home if that is what is making him upset.

"I'd do anything to make Lan Zhan feel better if I could."

He would, at personal sacrifice, which makes Lan Wangji's heart hurt. "Just stay here with me," he responds. "For now."

There are just times when Lan Wangji can't be fully satisfied. Xiongzhang had learned that when Wei Ying had been dead. But now that he has two of them, he's still unsatisfied.

"For as long as you want." He still has plenty of food to eat and he can always get more to keep himself busy with. He doesn't get to spend a lot of time with this Lan Wangji so he is happy to be by his side now until he no longer wishes him to be.

He slides another plate closer as he lifts his head back up, this one with just a simple salad on it.

Just a simple salad? Then Lan Wangji will help him pick at it. It's nice when they get to share something.

"Wei Ying, we are not supposed to talk while we are still eating," he comments.

"When have I ever been able to follow that rule, Lan Zhan?" When has he been able to follow any of their rules? But that one is particularly difficult for him. Good food is supposed to be coupled with good conversation...and good wine.

"We aren't talking when we are chewing so technically we are still following the rule."

"You are not supposed to talk during the meal," he responds, because Wei Ying knows what the rules mean. And also how big the bowls are for the three-bowls rule.

The silly goose.

He affectionately tugs at Wei Ying's hair.

"That's no fun, Lan Zhan. And we've already broken it plenty of times so why should we follow it now?"

Once it is broken it can't be put back together again. And no matter how many times Lan Wangji tells hm not to break it, Wei Wuxian isn't going to stop.

"Hm, it teaches discipline," he answers, plaintively.

Except that it has never taught Wei Ying any sort of discipline, has never taught him a shred of humility. No, plenty of other things had, but never the Gusu Lan rules.

Still, he returns to his food.

He laughs because discipline has never been something he has been good with. But he will behave and grant Lan Wangji a few moments of peace as he eats a little more of his food in silence.

Of course it can't possibly last long..

Once he finishes with his place he pushes it out of the way and leans on the table so he can watch the other man eat.

"Even though this isn't what I expected my life to be like, I am glad I was able to meet you during this year."
